weekly streetsnap #5: two is better than one

simple theme: two people in the snap!

please click on the photos to go to the original source with bigger photo and detail shots.

1. 지승배 and 치아키 on Hiphoper

Point: clever layering and mixing texture (especially heavier fabrics as the “second outerwear” under a more focal piece) while matching prints with your shoes!  What better way to direct everyone to look at your feet because you are wearing the awesome things that are creepers on them.  Tartan kilt with red + check border creepers, and the leopard print pair!!  (Also – wine hair is so pretty)

2. Neneko and Maaya on Shiftsnap

At first glance, the left girl’s outfit seems more interesting because of her unique tights and great shoes, but it’s actually the whole look on the right that made me include this here.  The cut and geometry of her coat and the way it falls with the aid of an understated but ever-useful belt is brilliant, and her shoes are just as cute as the girl on the left’s.  Her blonde short hair just completes the look as a break from all the black, and lets her quirky earring be visisble (click photo for source for earring!!)

3. ??? on Cracker Your Wardrobe

Collars coordinated in an interesting way are rare, but when they exist, they make it onto here.  The yellow and black is so playful but smart, when the bright top is matched with high waisted suspender pants (they aren’t overalls, nor jumpers, but they are great) and pumps.  The top on the right has a more uncommon collar, nice to see it with sheer sleeves – and this time, conversely, the bottom makes an otherwise smart outfit playful with a light blue skort.  (Also – her bag!!!!)

4. 백수지 and 진호성 on Hiphoper

Let me tell you this now: I hate the running shoes the guy is wearing.  It almost ruins the coord D: HOWEVER, I have to admit that his multi-print-seemingly-patchwork checkered coat and envelope clutch are carried so well that it redeems the outfit for the flawed shoes.  Cute how they match with the girl’s checkered pants (that matches her earmuffs) and also multi-material coat which is 1 part edgy and 3 parts whimsical.  Dr. Martens forever.

5. ??? on Spinns

Sofa king badass, matching pieces with the oversized glasses band tees, varsity jackets and black DM’s but very different looks.  I like the lacy socks on the left maxi-skirted, more girly look – they surprisingly make a very big difference.  The right one reminds me of playing cards and joker even if I can’t really tell what the print on her skirt is, but even if each item is rather busy, it works with the stripy tights.

MILK

Introducing… MILK magazine!

A bit of a change from my Jfashion scans.  It’s a Chinese lifestyle magazine with really cool graphic design, and since I got 2 free copies at the airport last month, I will share some of the pages.  I don’t have a scanner, but it should be good enough to give you an idea of its contents.  This post will be all the ‘double page’ photos because I am too lazy right now to put the single page ones together.

Click on each image for a larger size, I’m afraid to kill your browsers.

(wasn’t going to put any captions but I super love this one!!)

(last comment… FURRY LEOPARD VANS!!!)

(the “cartoons/anime” section is layed out like a manga spread… GEDDIT?!)

(luna sea!!!! ok last caption for real)

…AND THERE YOU HAVE IT!! 20 sneaky pages from 2 issues of MILK!
If you want to see more of MILK, this is their website which has a cool streetsnap section I used to stalk way before I even knew this magazine existed B-)

weekly streetsnap #4: the long and short of it

I like to call this week’s set of finds, the long and short of it.  Can you guess what the theme is from that?

Click on the images for larger view/close-ups from the original source.

1. Une on Brigit

This is so elegant – especially because of the collar and tights!  It’s like what a lolita/kodona dresser might wear on a casual off-subculture day.  What makes it so special, though, is the matching red of the skirt and hat; and the skirt is particularly cute because it is like a button down shirt, perfectly aligned with the closing button of the velvet blazer.

2. Alice Mukaide on Brigit

I like fairy kei pastels mixed with black, so the whole balanced imbalance of the mismatched tights, half-bun/half-out hairstyle makes the layering and the mix of the colors look even better.  Although half-hidden under the asymmetrical top, the skirt plays a key part in the balanced imbalance by providing textured volume to separate the pale color of the top and the white tights.

3. Yurie Akutsu on Cheeekme

My favorite way to see maxi-skirts worn are with boyish pieces (which is pretty much how all the maxi-skirts on the post are coordinated).  But this one is pale pink, like the top so it looks like a cute dress; but it’s topped with a checkered shirt, and I guess the dark lines on the checkered shirt match the Converse.  SUPER BOYXGIRL CONTRAST!

4. Christine on Christeric

I actually “liked” this post on my Bloglovin to bookmark it for ~a future weekly streetsnap~ which is this one.  Another skirt that buttons down (like #1) but it looks like a checkered shirt (O HAI #4) and because it has slits it misleads me into thinking they are pants in some of the photos!  The grunge feel of that and the (yay) shredded knit make it perfect.

5. Haiji on Lookbook

The dark red from #1 returns, with another set of matching skirt and hat but this one also matches her hair!  The relaxed feel of the sweater and the specific wearing of white tights give a very holiday/Christmassy feel…  Then topped off with (topped off at the bottom, bottomed off?) a pair of black suede creepers!  Makes winter look so effortless and comfortable.

The theme was…  SKIRTS!  Long skirts and short skirts!

My dry sense of humor will probably never change.

favorite albums of 2011

This blog doesn’t have enough music posts, and every year I get too lazy to decide which albums of the year are my favorites.  Today (or tomorrow, which is 01/01/12) marks a new beginning.  I’m just in time!  HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Takasago Army – Chthonic
This is a prime example the beauty of the concept album, which must be played in order for maximum listening potential.  It is vicious and powerful, as one criticizing politics and history should be.   But this time, the ehru and Chthonic’s folk elements are not just there to complement and balance as the melodic part of the darkness.  Their harmony combines beautifully with the menacing aggression, marrying echoes of the past with protests of discontent they caused to create an almost unreal, even time traveling, atmosphere.

Dead Throne – The Devil Wears Prada
From the beginning, it was as if TDWP really truly left their comfort zone, and truly stepped their game up with a new direction.  Though the term is loosely thrown around, it sounded more metal than modern metalcore’s synth-decorated breakdowns the band is known for and excel at.  Dead Throne was an album that just made me go, “WHOA, THIS IS TDWP?!” track after track after track.

The Dream, The Space – Crossfaith
While TDWP reduced the synths, I learned to embrace (or at least appreciate) the electronic fusion with hardcore (is it still called trancecore) outside of Enter Shikari because of this band.  Although much less raw than their 2009 release, Crossfaith do not necessarily have to rely on the techno part of the music and make it easier for me to like by strategically layering them with guitar riffs and retaining a generally human sound throughout.  Actually listen to the album, it blows the Omen cover at the end (“the only song people who do not know them know”) out of the water.

Honorable Mentions:

In Waves – Trivium

Sinners Never Sleep – You Me At Six

Suburbia I’ve Given You All And Now I’m Nothing – The Wonder Years

Dum Spiro Spero – Dir en grey

Almost, But Not Just Yet.

Neighborhoods – Blink-182
They actually thought up something novel, what we all deserved after waiting for so long for new material.  Though it is not at all ‘bigger and better’ than old favorites, it is creative and new for them… But more importantly, it finally happened.

Awakening – Blessthefall
Like Blink, I don’t think they made an album that was a great improvement from the last (which was seriously good) and more of kept along a similar style.  But I believe the list of best albums is about bettering oneself, so even if Awakening is full of the BTF goodness I know and love, it doesn’t make the top of the list just yet.
